Question 1:

In what ways is a hawker different from a shop owner?

Answer 1:

HAWKER SHOP OWNER
A hawker is a person who sells different items of regular use or grocery like vegetables, fruits, small plastic items etc. mainly with the help of a thela or a small cart going from one place to another. A shop owner sells a variety of items including grocery, clothes, etc. in his permanent shop where customers visit him and buy the items. He does not need to travel from one place to another.
A hawker generally runs a small business and requests people to buy his products. They generally sell items at a cheaper rate and bargaining is common. A shop owner’s business ranges from small to medium and generally they sell items at fixed prices and bargaining is not common.

Question 2:

Compare and contrast a weekly market and a shopping complex on the following:

Market Kinds of Goods sold Price            of goods Sellers Buyers
Weekly Market
Shopping Complex

Answer 2:

Market Kinds of Goods sold Price of goods Sellers Buyers
Weekly Market Sells items of daily use mainly like vegetables, clothes, utensils etc. Comparatively cheap            and reasonable   with bargaining allowed. Small       Traders and hawkers. Poor people mainly villagers or town people.
Shopping Complex Sell avariety of items like perfumes, cosmetics,           clothes, grocery     items,      other food items etc. Expensive with no bargaining allowed. Rich and big traders and shopkeepers. Rich and middle class people mainly living in big cities.

Question 3:

Explain how a chain of markets is formed. What purpose does it serve?

Answer 3:

A chain of market is like a cycle that goes on. It starts with the big wholesalers and ends with the consumer. Firstly, from big wholesaler small wholesalers buy who in turn sell these items to middle men who further distribute these items to shopkeepers and these shopkeepers sell the items to the customers who are the consumers. With every step the quantity sold reduces as the items get distributed to many down the hierarchy.

It is important to create this chain of markets as a market serves the purpose of demand and supply and acts as the source between the producers and consumers. It is not possible for a producer to sell all the goods to one single person neither is it possible for the consumer to buy all the products hence this market chain evenly distributes the goods among various consumers relieving the burden of the producer.

Question 4:

‘All persons have equal rights to visit any shop in a market place.’ Do you think this is true of shops with expensive products? Explain with examples.

Answer 4:

All persons have equal rights to visit any shop in a market and it does not depend on whether the shop is selling expensive items or cheaper ones. One can enter any shop check out the goods and buy the item if it fits in their budget. If they do not like or the product is out of their budget they can simply not buy anything or find a different shop for the same.

For example: When Rajat and Anusha went to a candy store they really liked a few candies however they had only Rs.100 with them. On the other hand the candies were expensive and none of the candies were less than Rs.250. So they decided to buy candies from a different shop which fit in their budget.

Question 5:

Buying and selling can take place without going to a market place’? Explain this statement with the help of examples.

Answer 5:

Buying and selling can take place without going to a market place as in today’s time period technology has developed a lot and we can use e-shopping sites or online shopping applications to buy the product of our choice. Moreover, buying and selling can be done over the phone as orders can be taken over the phone and products can be delivered. For example: When we want to buy a particular imported item like perfume which is not available in our country but is sold in some other country and it is not possible for us to physically visit the shop, then with the help of online shopping applications we can buy the item and get the product delivered at our doorstep.
