In what ways does the media play an important role in a democracy? [5 marks]

Answer 1:

(a)Media plays a very crucial role in every democracy. It acts as the bridge between the government and the common people, taking up the responsibility of providing correct information about events in country and world to the masses.

(b)Media helps to form and shape the public opinion in an unbiased manner.

(c)It helps the people to get aware of the current issues, and events of the whole world.

(d)It helps to provide awarness by educating the masses and also helps the citizens to get aware about their rights.

(e)Media helps to provide warnings and alerts in case of emergencies which can reduce the total amount of destruction.

Title to the above diagram can be “Relations between Big Business Houses and Media.”

The above diagram shows how both the big business houses and media share a symbiotic relationship with each other. One hand these houses attract people by advertising about their products with the help of media and on the other hand money flows back to the business houses when people buy the products. It is considered to be one of the most effective and cheapest way to reach the larger public.

You have read about the ways in which the media ‘sets the agenda’. What kind of effect does this have in a democracy? Provide two examples to support your point of view.

Answer 3:

Media sets the agenda in a number of ways and it effects democracy in ways like: creating unbiased public opinion in favor of or against a particular issue leading to formation of different types of outlook. It sets up agendas based on the importance and relevance of a particular topic, cause or event to be shown to the mass. However, this power of the media is often misused by various powerful people or organization to get their work done.

Question 4:

As a class project, decide to focus on a particular news topic and cut out stories from different newspapers on this. Also watch the coverage of this topic in news. Compare two newspapers and write down the similarity and differences in their reports. It might help to ask the following questions.

TOPIC: Jessica Murder Case: The article provides information about one of the most shocking murder cases in the history of India. Murder of a 34-year-old woman Jessica who was killed because she refused to serve liquor to one of the guests in the party.

ABC Newspaper XYZ Newspaper
This newspaper provides information about the date, time and venue of the particular crime and also captures views of few of the close members of the accused. The article also provides a picture of the victim and highlights the statements of the police officers, ministers and few other influential people talking in support of the accused. This newspaper provides a full timeline of the events that took place before and after the crime in the party. It discloses the number of people present in the party. It has a picture of the victim printed and highlights the situation of the victim’s family and has their statements printed. It does not create a preconceived notion about the guilty status of the accused and   also    leaves    an    opportunity for reader’s opinion by providing a telephone number  at  the  end  where  the  readers can call and state their opinions.
Statements from the family of the victim and importance to public opinion is left out. Also other important details which might be important for the case are left out. Comparatively more wholesome information is provided by this newspaper however it lacks any statements from the side of accused.
This article seems to be written from the point of view of the accused in order to prove his innocence. This article seems to be written from the point of view of the Victim’s family to gain sympathy for her.
Point of view of the victim’s party is left out which makes this article seem biased towards the accused as in such a crime primary importance should be given to the victim’s family. Also since this case involved the son of a  renowned politician, the newspaper does not seem to go against the will of the powerful. In this article the point of view of the accused is left out which tries to create a pre conceived notion about the guilt of the accused as the circumstances seemed in favor of the victim even though power was infavor of the accused.

Question 5:
