NCERT Solutions for Class 6 Science Chapter 15 – Air Around us – NCERT Exercises
Question 1:-
What is the composition of air?
Answer 1: –
Air is a mixture of many gases. It consists of water vapour, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and dust and smoke.
Question 2:-
Which gas in the atmosphere is essential for respiration?
Answer 2:-
Respiration is the process of taking in oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide. Hence, Oxygen is essential for respiration.
Question 3:-
How will you prove that air supports burning?
Answer 3:-
We can prove that air supports burning by the following experiment:-
1. Take a candle and place it in a large container filled with water.
2. Now light the candle.
3. After a while, cover the candle with an inverted glass tumbler.
4. Slowly the candle blows out and the water level inside the tumbler rises.
From the above experiment, we observe that the oxygen left inside the tumbler is used up in lighting the candle a little longer and is replaced by water. In absence of oxygen, the candle blows out.
Question 4:-
How will you show that air is dissolved in water?
Answer 4: –
We see bubbles in water when we boil it. These bubbles are formed due to presence of air in the water. With this observation we can say that air is dissolved in water.
Question 5:-
Why does a lump of cotton wool shrink in water?
Answer 5: –
Cotton wool is loosely packed and has air trapped inside its lumps. When we pour water on it, the air is replaced by water and the wools stick together better. So, we observe that cotton wool shrinks in water.
Question 6:-
The layer of air around the earth is known as ___________.
Answer 6: –
The layer of air around the earth is known as atmosphere.
Question 7:-
The component of air used by green plants to make their food, is ___________.
Answer 7: –
The component of air used by green plants to make their food, is carbon dioxide.
Question 8:-
List five activities that are possible due to the presence of air.
Answer 8: –
Air is essential for our lives. Five activities that are possible due to presence of air are:
1. Burning
2. Respiration
3. Photosynthesis
4. Flying Kite
5. Cloud formation
Question 9:-
How do plants and animals help each other in the exchange of gases in the atmosphere?
Answer 9: –
Plants and animals are interdependent on each other for the exchange of gases. Animals inhale oxygen produced by plants and exhale carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide is used by plants to perform photosynthesis for their food and they release oxygen again, continuing the cycle.
NCERT Solutions for Class 6 Science Chapter 15 – Air Around us – Video Explanation
Though we cannot see air but we can feel it around us. Surely, you must have felt its presence in many ways. You must have noticed that during storms the wind blows at a very high speed. It may even uproot trees and blow off the rooftops.
This chapter will help you in understanding the various components of air and the Earth’s atmosphere.
Topics Covered in Science Chapter 15 Air Around us:-
- IS AIR PRESENT EVERYWHERE AROUND US?
- WHAT IS AIR MADE UP OF?
– Water vapour
– Oxygen
– Nitrogen
– Carbon dioxide
– Dust and smoke
– HOW DOES OXYGEN BECOME AVAILABLE TO ANIMALS AND PLANTS LIVING IN WATER AND SOIL? - HOW IS THE OXYGEN IN THE ATMOSPHERE REPLACED?
Important Terms Relevant to understand NCERT Solutions for Class 6 Science Chapter 15 – Air Around us: –
Atmosphere: A thin layer of air surrounding the earth is called atmosphere. This layer extends upto many kilometres above the earth and contains a mixture of gases. The density of air in the atmosphere depends on the distance from surface. Higher altitudes have rarer air.
Carbon dioxide: It is a gaseous component of the air that is released by animals in respiration and used by plants to perform photosynthesis. It is given by the formula CO2.
Composition of air: The components that the air consists are called composition of air. Air is a mixture of many gases. It consists of water vapour, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and dust and smoke.
Oxygen: Oxygen is a gas which is necessary for sustenance of life. It is required for important life functions like respiration.
Nitrogen: Nitrogen is a gas and it makes the major part of the composition of air. It does not support combustion.
Smoke: Burning fuels produces smoke. Smoke mainly consists of a few gases and fine dust particles. It is harmful and can cause many respiratory diseases.
Windmill: Windmills are machines used to convert wind energy into mechanical or electrical energy. A windmill can be used to draw water from a tube well or generate electricity in windy areas.
