Food contains various nutrients that are required by our body to perform various tasks. Deficiency of any may lead to diseases. Thus, we need a balanced diet to meet all nutritional requirement.




Important Terms Relevant to understand Chapter 2 Components of food: –

Balanced diet: The food that contains nutrients in right amount and is supplemented by roughage and water is called a balanced diet.

Beriberi: Beriberi is a deficiency disease caused due to lack of Vitamin B1 and leaves muscles weak and patients have little energy to work.

Carbohydrates: Nutrients that are present in our food in form of sugar and starch and give us energy are called carbohydrates.

Energy: The power we use to carry our day to day lives is called energy. Carbohydrates and fats are energy giving foods.

Fats: Fats are energy giving resources which can be found in our daily food. Oils and ghee are good sources of fat.

Minerals: Minerals are required by our body in small amounts. Each mineral is required for proper growth of body and to maintain good health.

Nutrients: Components needed by our body for proper growth and healthy working are called nutrients. Nutrients like proteins, vitamins and minerals are essential for our body.

Proteins: Proteins are nutrients required for growth and repair of the body. They can be found in food items like fish and pulses.

Roughage: Roughage is an important part of a balanced diet which adds bulk to our food and helps in getting rid of undigested food from our body. Salads add roughage to our food.

Scurvy: A deficiency disease caused because of lack of Vitamin C in the body is called scurvy. Bleeding gums is a common symptom of scurvy.

Starch: Starch is complex substances found in trees and food items. They are a source of carbohydrates.

Vitamins: Substances required by our body for proper functioning and keeping healthy are called vitamins. Vitamins are different kinds like vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin K. These are important for different functions of the body. Lack of vitamins in the body can lead to various deficiency diseases like scurvy and rickets.
