1. Answer the following questions.

(i) Why are people considered a resource?

Answer – People are considered the greatest resource because it is the people who use it and modify a material which was otherwise considered useless into a useful thing. It is the human’s ability which he enhances through his knowledge that forms a resource.




(ii) What are the causes for the uneven distribution of population in the world?

Answer – The uneven distribution of population in the world is due to certain factors:

  • Different climates, some are harsh while others are pleasant
  • Different physiography, people are more concentrted in the plain lands than mountains
  • Political reasons, some areas are characterised by turmoil and tension
  • Resource availability, places where there are mines, agrivultural land, more people flock there.

(iii) The world population has grown very rapidly. Why?

Answer – The population of the world has grown rapidly due to the changes in the number of births and death. There are more number of births than death, due to various heath improvements. There is also a large number of in-migration from the developing countries. Thus, population has increased vastly.

(iv) Discuss the role of any two factors influencing population change.

Answer – Two factors influencing population change:

Fall of Death rate: Due to improved medical conditions the number of people dying per year has decreased. People now live longer.

Rise of Birth rate: Maternal health has also improved over the years in various countries. There are more number of nurses, doctors, health institutions to deliver babies.

(v) What is meant by population composition?

Answer – Population composition refers to the structure of the population. How many females as well as males are there in the different age groups help to determine how the population composition of a region is.




(vi) What are population pyramids? How do they help in understanding about the population of a country?

Answer – Population pyramids are horizontal bar diagrams showing the number of females and males within each age group.
They help in understanding how well is the distribution of population within a particular country.  The population pyramid also tells us how many dependents there are in a country
