1. Answer the following questions.

(i) What is agriculture?

Answer – The cultivation of the soil for the growing of crops and the rearing of animals to provide food either for self-consumption or for marketing is known as agriculture. It includes plouding, sowing, harvesting and reaping the crops with proper irrigation.

(ii) Name the factors influencing agriculture?

Answer – Some of the factors influencing agriculture are:

  • Climate
  • Soil
  • Sunlight
  • Wind
  • Amount of moisture in the soil

(iii) What is shifting cultivation? What are its disadvantages?

Answer – Shifting cultivation is a practice of mostly tribal people who practice agriculture on a land then after the harvest is done, burn the land and move on to some other land to cultivate.
This greatly reduces the fertility and land productivity of the area.

(iv) What is plantation agriculture?

Answer – Plantation agriculture is a modern commercial way of agriculture where plots of land are cultivated in a scientific way with proper machinery, the area sown is also large. Mainly, tea, coffee, sugarcane, cotton are produced in the plantation technique.

(v) Name the fibre crops and name the climatic conditions required for their growth.

Answer – Some of the fibre crops are:

  • Cotton:

Climatic conditions-
Temperature: Cotton grown well in a temperature of 24°C and Rainfall: 60-100 cm rainfall is essential for the cultivation of cotton.

  • Jute:

Climatic conditions-
Temperatures ranging from 25-30 °C and relative humidity of 70%–90% are favorable for successful cultivation.

3. Give reasons.

(i) In India agriculture is a primary activity. This is due to the tropical monsoon climate of the country and owing to the vast labour force which is occupied in the agricultural sector.

(ii) Different crops are grown in different regions. This is due to the varying climatic and soil conditions in different regions.

4. Distinguish between the followings.

(i) Primary activities and tertiary activities- Primary activities are those which involve extraction or using of the nature for example cultivation, mining, fishing are primary activities. Tertiary activities are those which involves service and requires human resource such as trade and transport.

(ii) Subsistence farming and intensive farming– Subsistence farming is practiced to only provide for the family and themselves, it is in a less quantity, while intensive farming is practiced to produce a crop in a vast amount so that it could lead to commercial gains.
