Answer – The four major means of transport are roadways, railways, waterways and airways.

(ii) What do you understand by the term ‘settlement’?

Answer – Settlements are places or areas where people build their houses and stay with their families. It can be on a plain land or in the mountains.

(iii) Which are the activities practised by the rural people?

Answer – Some of the activities that are practiced by rural people are:

  • Agriculture
  • Livestock Ranching
  • Fishing
  • Forestry

(iv) Mention any two merits of railways.

Answer – Merits of Railways:

  • The railways carry heavy goods and people over long distances quickly and cheaply.
  • Railway lines can be build within rugged terrains like mountains also connecting remote areas

(v) What do you understand by communication?

Answer – Communication is the means or way by which we interact with others and convey our thoughts and ideas.

(vi) What is mass media?

Answer – Mass media is a means of communication which helps us to connect to a large group of people, for example, newspapers, radio, television helps to convey a news or message to a large number of population.

(i) Today’s world is shrinking : Due to the various modes of transport and communication a person sitting in one corner of the world can talk or visit to his friend or family in another area of the world. Distances as great as 1000km can be travelled in one day by aeroplanes within a few hours which was not possible in earlier times. This is the reason we, say, that the world is shrinking and is limited to a phone call or connected through internet.
