 1. Answer the following questions.

(i) What is an ecosystem?

Answer – An ecosystem is a community of living organisms (plants, animals human beings) along with the non-living components (land, air water) of their environment, which interacts in a way to form a complex system. These biotic and abiotic components are linked together through various chains and has a consistent supply of energy flow among them.

(ii) What do you mean by natural environment?

Answer – Natural Environment includes everything from Biotic or Abiotic that occurs naturally. The rocks and minerals that compose the crust, the waters of the ocean and lakes, the gases in the atmosphere as well as the living organisms we see around us, is a part of the Natural Environment.

(iii) Which are the major components of the environment?

Answer – The major components of the Environment are:

  • The Abiotic or Physical environment which refers to all non-living factors like temperature, light, rainfall, soil, minerals etc.
    It comprises of atmosphere, lithosphere and hydrosphere.
  • The Biotic environment which includes all living forms like the plants, birds, animals, and micro-organisms.

 (iv) Give four examples of human made environment.

Answer – The house, the school or college, the work place and the amusement parks are important examples of human made environment.

(v) What is lithosphere?

Answer – The outer part of the earth consists of plates which are covered by hard rocks and soil. This zone makes it possible for the human being or terrestrial animals to survive. This zone is known as the lithosphere.

(vi) Which are the two major components of biotic environment?

Answer – Two major components of biotic environment are Plants and Animals.

(vii) What is biosphere?

Answer – The biosphere, is the layer within the planet Earth where life exists. This layer ranges from heights of up to ten kilometres above sea level, to depths of the ocean. The ranges are determined according to the zones which helps life to sustain, has water and oxygen.

Give reasons.

(i) Man modifies his environment: Man modifies his environment to make the maximum use of it. With the knowledge of man and his skills, man has been able to modify the environment in a fascinating way to help make life easier. The invention of fire has made life easier in so many ways. The invention of wheel has made it easier to transport long distances in a short amount of time.

(ii) Plants and animals depend on each other: Plants are the primary producers also known as autotrophs which can directly absorb the sunlight and make its own food. The animals which are primary or secondary consumers depend on plants for their energy and food. They consume the plants and gain energy. The plants on the other hand remains stable in one place, to germinate or spread in other areas, it needs animals which can travel. Thus both are dependent on each other.
