When we know the speed of a moving object, say an Ola Cab, we only have information on how fast its moving without actually knowing whether the Car is moving in North Direction, South Direction or otherwise. Velocity provides us information about both, the speed of the car and the direction of speed. Velocity definition physics is given as the distance travelled by a body, per unit of time in a given direction. It can be represented as : –
Lets assume
v = velocity of the body
s = distance travelled by the body in the given direction (also known as displacement)
t = time taken (to travel distance “s”)
In such a case, the velocity of the body is given as under : –
Velocity = ( DISTANCE TRAVELLED IN PARTICULAR DIRECTION/TIME TAKEN TO TRAVEL SUCH DISTANCE )
Further, given that distance travelled in a given direction is known as ‘Displacement’, Velocity physics definition, of a body can also be defined as the displacement produced per unit time.
Velocity = ( DISPLACEMENT /TIME TAKEN )
SI unit of velocity is metres per second , written as m/s or m s–1 .
