Properties of Addition
In maths, properties of addition are rules that are always true when we add numbers. They help us solve problems faster and smarter!
Today you'll learn 3 super powers of addition:
Fun Fact: The word "commutative" comes from the Latin word commutare, meaning "to exchange." Ancient traders used this idea thousands of years ago — whether you trade 5 apples for 3 coins, or 3 coins for 5 apples, the deal is the same! ✨
🔄 Commutative Property
When you swap the order of two numbers being added, the sum is always the same.
Think of it like flipping a sandwich — it still tastes the same whether you hold it one way or the other! 15 + 36 is the same as 36 + 15.
🔵 Identity Property
When you add zero to any number, the number stays exactly the same. Zero is called the additive identity.
Zero is like an invisible helper — it shows up but adds nothing at all! 64 + 0 is simply 64.
🔗 Associative Property
When adding three numbers, you can change which two you add first (by moving the brackets) and the total stays the same.
Imagine three friends collecting stickers: (Anna+Ben)+Carl is the same total as Anna+(Ben+Carl). Who groups up first doesn't matter!
