Decimals – The numbers which are expressed in decimal forms are called decimals. In order, decimal has two parts; whole number part and decimal part and these parts are separated by a dot (.).
Example 1
Find whole-number part and decimal part from 43.17
Solution
Decimal has two parts; whole number part and decimal part and these parts are separated by a dot (.)
The left side of decimal point is called whole number part.
Hence, the whole number part in the given number is = 43
The right side of decimal point is called decimal part.
Hence, the decimal part in the given number is = 17
Example 2
Find whole-number part and decimal part from 78.9
Solution
Decimal has two parts; whole number part and decimal part and these parts are separated by a dot (.)
The left side of decimal point is called whole number part
Hence, the whole number part in the given number is = 78
The right side of decimal point is called decimal part
Hence, the decimal part in the given number is = 9
Like and Unlike Decimals
Like Decimals are decimals having the same number of digit after the decimal point or an equal number of Decimal places.
Unlike Decimals are decimals having unequal number of digit after the decimal point or unequal number of Decimal places.
Like and Unlike decimals Examples
Example 1
Find the Like Decimals in the given sets of Decimals ?
6.9, 7.15, 17.26
Solution
Decimal Numbers, having the same number of Decimal places are called Like Decimals.
The number of Decimal places in 6.9 is 1
The number of Decimal places in 7.15 is 2
The number of Decimal places in 17.26 is 2
Hence, 17.26 and 7.15 are Like Decimals since these two numbers have 2 Decimal places, while 6.9 has only 1 Decimal place
Example 2
Find the Like Decimals in the given sets of Decimals ?
12.52, 24.61, 12.1
Solution
Decimal Numbers, having the same number of Decimal places are called Like Decimals.
The number of Decimal places in 12.52 is 2
The number of Decimal places in 24.61 is 2
The number of Decimal places in 12.1 is 1
Hence, 12.52 and 24.61 are Like Decimals since these two numbers have 2 Decimal places, while 12.1 has only 1 Decimal place
Example 3
Find the Unlike Decimal in the given sets of Decimals?
4.21, 6.374, 7.274, 6.284
Solution
Where the number of Decimal places in two Decimals are different, they are called Unlike Decimals.
The number of Decimal places in 4.21 is 2
The number of Decimal places in 6.374 is 3
The number of Decimal places in 7.274 is 3
The number of Decimal places in 6.284 is 3
Hence, 4.21 is the Unlike Decimal amongst the given Decimals since it has only 2 Decimal place while all other numbers have 3 Decimal places.
Example 4
Find the unlike Decimal in the given sets of Decimals?
11.32, 25.3, 12.54, 17.21
Solution
Where the number of Decimal places in two Decimals are different, they are called Unlike Decimals.
The number of Decimal places in 11.32 is 2
The number of Decimal places in 25.3 is 1
The number of Decimal places in 12.54 is 2
The number of Decimal places in 17.21 is 2
Hence, 25.3 is the Unlike Decimal amongst the given Decimals since it has only 1 Decimal place while all other numbers have 2 Decimal places.
