Expanded Form

In order to find Expanded form of a number, we write the value of each of the digits in the number, according to its place value and express it as a sum of all these values. The steps involved are as under : –

Step – 1 – Write the value of each of the digits in the number, according to its place value
Step – 2 – Express the number, as the sum of all these values.

In other words, we can say that writing a number as the sum of the place value of the digits.




Expanded Form Examples

Example 1

WriteĀ expandedĀ form of 54328?

Explanation

Step – 1

In expanded form , we write the value of each of the digits, according to its place value
In 54328
5 is in ten thousands place.
5 x 10000 = 50000
4 is in thousands place.
4 x 1000 = 4000
3 is in hundreds place.
3 x 100 = 300
2 is in tens place.
2 x 10 = 20
8 is in ones place
8 x 1 = 8

Step – 2

If we add above results, we would get
50000 + 4000 + 300 + 20 + 8




Example 2

WriteĀ expandedĀ form of 832492?

Explanation

Step – 1

In expanded form , we write the value of each of the digits, according to its place value
In 832492
8 is in lakhs place.
8 x 100000 = 800000
3 is in ten thousands place.
3 x 10000 = 30000
2 is in thousands place.
2 x 1000 = 2000
4 is in hundreds place.
4 x 100 = 400
9 is in tens place.
9 x 10 = 90
2 is in ones place
2 x 1 = 2

Step – 2

If we add above results, we would get
800000 + 30000 + 2000 + 400 + 90 + 2

 

Example 3

Write expanded form of 954836?

Explanation

Step – 1

In expanded form , we write the value of each of the digits, according to its place value
In 954836
9 is in lakhs place.
9 x 100000 = 900000
5 is in ten thousands place. 5 x 10000 = 50000
4 is in thousands place.
4 x 1000 = 4000
8 is in hundreds place.
8 x 100 = 800
3 is in tens place.
3 x 10 = 30
6 is in ones place
6 x 1 = 6

Step – 2

If we add above results, we would get Expanded form of 954836
900000 + 50000 + 4000 + 800 + 30 + 6
